TFU 4.3 Video CD-ROM: Jazz Blues

Altered dominant chords, tritone substitutions, chromatic passing chords, and the melodic material needed to jazz up our standard blues progressions will be introduced in this on-going blues series. The chord progressions and substitutions learned in this series are not only applicable to the blues, but can also be applied to standard tunes and pop tunes. You'll be learning new voicings and how to voice-lead in order to create smooth connections between chords.

Featured Guitar Lessons of the Month

Sizzling Pentatonic - Aeolian Groove Riff
by Jeff Scheetz
Using a lick during your rhythm groove can not only break up the monotony of the rhythm, but it also can impress the heck out of your guitar playing pals! Regardless of your motive, this is something that makes things more interesting musically to me. I have always liked to listen to a player who ...

Walking In Two - Blues Bass for Guitar
by Mark Stefani
In this month's edition of Jazzed Blues I'll be discussing one of my favorite subjects once again, playing walking bass lines and chords on the guitar. I've played the bass for over 35 years and thanks to my late father's love for great bass players, I was exposed to solid walking concepts on that instrument long before my chordal expertise on guitar had matured to a point where the two joined forces....

Blues In The Style of Bert Jansch
by Steve Elliott
Here's a fingerstyle piece in the style of the great Bert Jansch. It was Bert who turned Davey Graham's phenomenal "Angie" into a fingerstyle standard. Jansch has had a monumental influence on all contemporary pickers and even old rockers like Jimmy Page, who certainly wouldn't have written the opening sequence to "Stairway To Heaven" without that haunting Jansch sound ...

Prelude For Cello In D By J.S. Bach
by Jamie Andreas
This piece by Bach is a favorite amongst guitarists, both fingerstyle and pickstyle, as it is often used as a pick study. Here, I am playing it fingerstyle on a classical guitar. One of the most important things we have to do before practicing this, or any piece, is to decide on our fingering. In a complex piece like this ...

Tony Rice's Banjo Roll
by Andy Ellis
Straight from Tony's book "Tony Rice Teaches Bluegrass Guitar" comes this deceptively simple three-bar flat-picking warm up that'll open the door to chordal, string-skipping and arpeggio explorations. This pattern'll set that front porch to rockin'...

LAST CHANCE! Pick Up Hamburger's New Blues Architect with Bonus CD

Order By May 31st - Get FREE Bonus CD!
Get "Blues Architect: The Commentaries," an audio CD featuring all the extended solos and commentaries with the purchase of Blues Architect Course

Most of us tend to just solo on the fly, but what if you had a blueprint, something to help you organize your improvising? David Hamburger shows you how to construct ear-bending blues solos by working with the underlying structure of any blues progression or vamp.

Using major and minor pentatonic scales, mixolydian scales, chromatic passing notes and altered tones, you’ll learn how to develop tasty, soulful solos packed with tension and release that gradually build over two or three choruses to a compelling climax.

Instead of playing the same old licks, you’ll discover how to use root targeting, call-and-response phrasing, hybrid grip picking, double stops, triads and chord hits to create dynamic, exciting solos over everything from a Texas shuffle or a blues-rock groove to a New Orleans-style funk feel.

Blues Architect is optimized for solid intermediate to early-advanced players and is presented across 4 CD-ROMs (Windows and Mac compatible), features 80 full-length video lessons, text overviews, practice tracks, standard notation and interactive Power Tab so you can "see" and "hear" the tab and notation played out at any tempo. TrueFire's video lesson player features zoom, frame advance, looping and other instructional functions.
