TFU 3.5 - Rock Tricks
TFU students will be receiving TFU CD 3.5 within the week. This month's TFU is quite special as it contains the full version of Jeff Scheetz's top-ranked Rock Tricks interactive video course. Not a rocker? No worries ... these "tricks" are commonly deployed across all styles.
Electric guitar offers players more dialects, techniques and colors to draw on than any other instrument, bar none. Today's player needs tasty chops, a sophisticated sense of rhythm and harmony, improvisational skills and a bagful of electric guitar techniques. Rock Tricks is the quintessential "how to" for hammers, legato, palm muting, tapping, open strings, whammy, pick tricks, sweeps, pinch and natural harmonics.
Jeff, a regular contributor to TFU News and a monster player in his own right, first demonstrates the "trick" and then breaks down the technique thoroughly across 20 video lessons.
> Natural Harmonics > Pinch Harmonics > Sweep Picking > Palm Muting > Legato/Staccato > Open Strings > Two-Hand Tapping > Hammer/Pull-Off > Whammy Bar > Pick Tricks

Jeff Scheetz is one of the few top notch performing and studio artists who can also expertly communicate the what, why and how of modern rock guitar. Scheetz exploded on the scene a few years back as the "Hot Pick" of all the major guitar pubs.
This year, Jeff produced TrueFire course, Rock Solid to help rock players develop tasty chops, a more sophisticated sense of rhythm and harmony, a bagful of rock techniques, improvisational skills and other essential tricks of the trade. Here's one of the solos from the course, called “The Longest Night.”

Ten Guitar Tricks You Must Know
I just completed two courses for TrueFire called "Rock Solid" and "Rock Tricks" but the second title is a bit misleading because these are actually Ten Guitar Tricks You Must Know. Regardless of the style you play, having a grip on these techniques will prepare your playing for any situation. All twenty of my Rock Tricks video lessons are featured in this month's TFU video CD-Rom.
So dig, and the next time a singer turns to you at the end of a song and says "take ‘em home", you'll have a few tricks up your sleeve. By the way, I'm moderating a forum about techniques at the TrueFire site so stop by and say hello!

First & Last Impressions
Whether you're taking a smokin' guitar solo or playing a soulful chord-melody arrangement of a classic standard, intros and endings play a critical role in what your listener will remember from your performance. With that in mind, one valuable way of spending your time is arranging solid moves that can be used effectively over and over again. This has historically been the trademark of great chordal guitarists, ranging from Chet Atkins and Earl Klugh to Joe Pass, Tuck Andress, and many others.
The focus for this month's lesson is on chord-melody intros, in particular one that I played on a 1996 jazz duo recording of Errol Garner's famous "Misty" composition. The challenge was to take a standard series of turnaround changes in the concert original key of Eb, and come up with a nice set of chord voicings and fills, and set the stage for the saxophonist to play the melody. You'll find that this intro will work perfectly, not only for this tune but also for many others like it.

Play "Misty" for Me
"Misty" is a classic all-time standard that many jazz guitarists like Joe Pass, Martin Taylor and Herb Ellis have in their repetoire. This AGW arrangement hopefully has the virtue of being relatively easy to play and yet is still satisfying and rich.
In this lesson, you’ll hear that whilst the playing remains fairly faithful to the tab, it does move off into improvisation in places. And this is really your assignment. Learn the tab as it stands and then try and stamp your own style on it. For instance, instead of grabbing the first Dmaj7 chord in the second bar after the pick-up, try arpeggiating it or study how the single note runs work with the chord melody movement and see if you can come up with any additional passing runs and licks.

Pavane By Gaspar Sanz with Practice Tips by Jamie Andreas
Gaspar Sanz was a 17th century Spanish classical guitarist whose work influenced countless generations to come. His work is known for its irregular rhythms that became synonymous with many styles of flamenco in years to come.
This classical piece is very beautiful and rewarding to play. It is of intermediate difficulty, but I have given many performance tips to make it easier. I have also included all the important fingering. Make sure you observe all of these guides to playing this piece.

Pick of the Month: Twin Tones And Layered Lines by Andy Ellis
Whether it's sweet and singing or rude and searing, the sound of guitars locked in harmony is powerful and seductive. Fortunately, it's not difficult to create this dimensional effect. Once you understand a few basic techniques, you'll be able to arrange harmonized guitar parts and insert them into your own music. To that end, let's analyze, in this two-part lesson, a handful of classic, twin guitar passages inspired by the Allman Brothers, Steely Dan, Thin Lizzy, the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Humble Pie, and the maestro of track layering, Brian May.
