Minor Moods - Creative Noodling
by Mark Stefani
Do you ever find yourself just "fooling around" when deep inside you think that you should be seriously practicing? I'm always amused by how players define practicing, because some of the most creative moments stem from simply noodling with regard to licks, chords, tunes, bass lines, and so on.

Some of the least creative moments are when you just go through the motions playing something you already know....

Etude #1 In C By Fernando Sor, Part 1
by Jamie Andreas
Andres Segovia was the most important, and in many ways the greatest classical guitarist of the 20th Century. He provided much guidance for the developing guitarist who wished to achieve the level of mastery he had achieved himself.

This study is taken from the music of the great Spanish guitarist Fernando Sor, and is the first of a collection of 20 pieces Segovia believed should be studied and mastered by guitar students....

Metal Guru: Rusty Cooley The Pentatonic Workout
by Jude Gold
Metal is a lot different today than it was in the ’80s. Back then, things were brutal. If you didn’t know how to solo, you weren’t even looked upon as a guitar player. It was the whole “if you only play rhythm, you’re only half a man” mentality.

Musically speaking, metal guitar has devolved over the years. It has gone backwards from featuring over-the-top, killer playing all the way back to a three-chord format that’s arguably not that different from where rock and roll started...

NEW VIDEO COURSE! Vamps, Jams & Improvisation by Frank Vignola

Vamps, Jams and Improvisation illustrates dozens of approaches for developing solid melodic and rhythmic ideas for soloing or comping over one and two-chord vamps. You'll first learn how to think melodically and then how to best express those ideas, in a vamp or jam setting, with the other band members.

Vamps, Jams and Improvisation fills your toolbox with creative devices like melodic patterns, call and response, stutter picking, guide tones, horizontal lines, tone targeting, muffled arpeggios, chromatics, expressions, passing tones and other techniques for generating ideas on the fly. You’ll also learn how to develop ideas around unusual scales like the Super Locrian, Bartok minor and harmonic minor scales.  Rhythm and comping are also covered with equal emphasis; clave rhythms, inversions, rhythmic alteration, quartal harmony, bubble parts, chord punches and how to clearly communicate and then lock up with the band is demonstrated in detail.
